Today, July 13, 2021, the Department of Education announced changes to the Requirements for Verification. This change is reducing the number of documents needed for institutions to process an aid file. If you have already submitted the needed forms, we will still review the documents as required. If you have not already submitted the needed forms, please log into My.Montcalm.edu and review the status of your file on NetPartner to see if documents are still needed. Below is the announcement from the Department of Education to institutions.

Changes to 2021-2022 Verification Requirements
PUBLICATION DATE July 13, 2021
DCL ID GEN-21-05
SUBJECT Changes to 2021-2022 Verification Requirements
SUMMARY This letter provides information about changes we are making to certain aspects of the FAFSA® verification requirements as a result of the ongoing economic, social, and physical impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear Colleague:

To provide relief to millions of students and colleges facing challenges and barriers resulting from the ongoing national emergency, we are focusing this award year’s effort strictly on identity and fraud. This means we are waiving verification of most Free Application for Federal Student Aid/Institutional Student Information Record (FAFSA®/ISIR) information, except for Identity/Statement of Educational Purpose and High School Completion Status under Verification Tracking Groups V4 and V5. This waiver may apply no matter where institutions are in the verification process, e.g., if documents have been collected or requested, but verification has not been completed, or if an institution has not started the verification process. However, this does not exempt institutions from reviewing all documents for conflicting information concerning a student’s eligibility. This waiver begins July 13, 2021, and applies for the remainder of the 2021-2022 FAFSA processing and verification cycle.

Institutions maintain the discretion to select students for verification according to consistently applied institutional policies. However, the Department encourages institutions to consider amending such policies to limit selection in a manner that offers relief to students and families during the ongoing national emergency.

Institutions are legally obligated to protect student information used in the administration of the Title IV Federal student financial aid programs. FSA partners must implement strong security policies and controls and undertake ongoing monitoring and management for the systems, databases and processes that support all aspects of the administration of Federal student financial aid programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (the HEA). Such systems, databases and processes include all systems that collect, process, and distribute information – including PII – in support of applications for and receipt of Title IV student assistance. DCL ID: GEN-15-18.

To ensure compliance with privacy laws pertaining to the collection and processing of Federal Student Aid, required documents needed to process financial aid can be submitted in the following ways: Financial Aid File Upload Form, fax, mail, sent from MCC email address, encrypted or password protected email from outside email (non MCC email address), electronically submitted, or dropped off in the Financial Aid Office at the campus.

Recent regulation changes made by the Department of Education have reduced the number of semesters that a student is eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant. Beginning April 15, 2012, the Department of Education started sending email notifications to students who might have a reduced Pell or no Pell eligibility.

At this time, the Department of Education is still providing details to the colleges and universities so that the financial aid offices will know which students have limited eligibility.

Information regarding Pell Grant eligibility can be found at Federal Pell Grants | Federal Student Aid.
