The highest degree offered by MCC is the associate degree. However, any degree completed at MCC can serve as the starting point for a bachelor's degree, although transfer credits may differ based on program, type of classes, and transfer school and major. For students wanting to earn a bachelor's degree in a "traditional" major, such as English, math, and history, MCC offers three main transfer degrees: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Liberal Studies. These three degrees offer flexibility in course selection, and students can develop a curriculum for their program at MCC that fits well with the 4-year school working with a counselor at MCC and transfer representatives from the 4-year institution. Transfer degrees also offer great opportunities to fulfill the MACRAO agreement in the degree, which helps ease the transfer process. For students pursuing occupational degrees, the curriculum is divided between general education requirements, which offer some degree of flexibility, and the program requirements, listing the classes required to obtain that specific associate degree. While these programs are designed to prepare students primarily to enter the workforce, several articulation agreements allow students to pursue higher degrees, either in a traditional 2+2 or in a 3+1 format. Students will thus pursue two or three years at MCC before the transfer. MACRAOThe MACRAO agreement allows students to meet general education requirements at the four-year institution by completing core classes at the two-year institution. The MACRAO agreement requires that students meet the following requirements: - 6 credit hours in English
- 8 credit hours in humanities
- 8 credit hours in natural science and math
- 8 credit hours in social science
Most public and some private four year schools in Michigan honor the MACRAO agreement, although some require exceptions to the rule. Also, some schools require additional courses for the general education component, such as specific communication requirements, or classes meeting specific cultural or global requirements. Students should check with MCC counselors and their transfer school for more information. Articulation AgreementsArticulation agreements are formal, binding agreements that allow students to take selected courses at MCC to transfer directly into programs at the receiving institution. MCC has several articulation agreements with both two- and four year institutions, both in-state and out-of-state. A list of the articulation agreements is available by program further down on this page. Transfer GuidesFour-year institution transfer guides serve as roadmaps for MCC students to select the best classes for transfer into specific majors. They are not binding like the articulation agreements, but they do provide a solid foundation for transfer into specific majors. Often, the four year institution will develop the guides to meet the requirements to graduate from MCC with classes that meets requirements to transfer in at or close to the junior level.
